#7 Concept Map- Basic Food Groups




Basic Food Groups


I.       Fruits


It is important to eat one fruit with every meal. There are many different types of fruits so you can eat a different fruit each meal. Apples, oranges, melons, bananas, and grapes are just a few examples of fruits. Eating fruit helps to keep our bodies healthy.


A.    Berries

B.    Melons


II.     Vegetables


Vegetables should make up a major portion of our diet. Though these are usually our least favorite, vegetables provide us with the nutrients we need to stay healthy. We should try to eat one to two servings of vegetables per meal. Corn, celery, peas, broccoli, and potatoes are all examples of vegetables. Almost all vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked

III.    Grains


The grain category doesn't really look good but it still has very yummy foods. There are two different types of grains, whole grains and refined grains. Some examples of whole rains are brown rice and oatmeal. White bread and white rice are examples of refined grains. It is healthier to eat more whole grains than refined grains. It is important to eat 2 servings of grains per day.

IV.    Dairy


Dairy products help our bodies stay healthy and keep our bones strong. Milk, cheese, yogurt, pudding, and ice cream are some examples of foods found in this category. It is important that we get 2-3 cups of dairy products everyday.

V.     Protein


Protein helps to give our bodies the fuel it needs to keep going and keeps us full so we don't overeat. There are many different types of foods that belong to the protein category. Chicken, steak, eggs, and seafood are all examples of protein foods. It is important for us to try and eat 2-4 oz of protein with each meal.

3. Develop an understanding of the characteristics, structures, life cycles,
interactions, and environments of organisms.
      c. Communicate the importance of food and explain how the body utilizes food.

  2. Great topic! I think it is important to include food groups to kindergarten students. Sometimes when they start school they do not understand why they have to eat what they are served in the lunchroom. This lesson would help them understand the importance of a "balanced plate."

  12. I think your topic is super important for kids of a young age to know. I love the coloring their own foods, cutting them out, and pasting them idea. You could even add another framework from arts into that lesson.
